Tasting notes by Hoptopia - Lee Williams

Aroma: Pollen Heavy Flower, Pine, Sweaty Sock, Fresh Cut Strawberry, Honey, Confectioner's Sugar

Taste: Lemon Peel, Eucalyptus, Pink Grapefruit, Coriander, Lavender

Proclaiming to have approximately 42 hops in every 500ml bottle, this much buzzed about American IPA from much buzzed about New Zealand brewery Epic, is flat out one of the absolute best beers I have ever tasted - certainly one of the very best IPA's. It has a sweet floral aroma; all lush and green at the periphery. Through the entire drink the bitterness has a dewy freshness about it. There is something so perfect, so simply balanced and approachable about this beer. As distribution for this beer grows in the U.S., I'd be severely remiss if I didn't urge you all to try it. The bottle reviewed here was bottled in Auckland on 9/30/10 and reviewed in NYC on 10/4/10.

Tasting notes by Joelle Thomson

It’s not called Armageddon for nothing; this intensely flavoursome beer is packed with flavours of sweet spice, currants and orange rind, all intermingling in a medium bodied, intense beer that begs to be thought about and savoured – as well as consumed and enjoyed. Love that bitter finish.

Appearance: beautiful golds and straw. Pithy off-white head is voluminous, airy, and whipped. Huge head lingers long though with no lace.

Nose: pine needles, orange peel and zest. Orange pie, marmalade – moist, juicy, and chunky. Orange is first while pine takes second stage with fir trees Christmas trees, and prickly sticky pine needles. Burlap sacks and blankets underneath.

Palate: clean with little to no attenuation of residual sugars – crisp. Sweet breads are infused with orange zest and sweet chunky orange marmalade. Orange, honeycomb, and Christmas trees. Gentle subtle pervasive sweetness balanced by orange zest and piney forestry delights. Rather clean finish lightly dries and brings you back for more. Epic balance of flavors. Pine and fir needles are a solid bed upon which to stand.

Final Thoughts: wow and wow. I’ve heard good things about Epic Brewing in New Zealand and they definitely live up to their reputation.
