NZ beers impress - Grill Magazine
Judges at the New Zealand International Beer Awards held in Nelson in April, were full of praise for the standard of beer on show, and in particular the high quality of New Zealand entries. Overseas judge, Matilda Bay’s Brad Rogers from Australia, and chief judge, Geoff Griggs, both commented on how high brewing standards in this country are if this competition is a measure. While only five gold medals were awarded from a total of 196 entries, there were very few poor quality beers, and judges grill spoke with were unable to remember any. “The standard was higher than ever,” commented leading beer critic and chief judge, Geoff Griggs, who has had extensive experience judging in New Zealand and international competitions. Top award went to a new name, from an established podium performer. Supreme Winner, Epic Pale Ale, brewed by those responsible for the Cock and Bull beers, is just another trophy for brewer, Luke Nicholas’ cabinet. Sponsored by New Zealand Hops, the awards are open to international brewers as well as locals. One of two beer competitions held in New Zealand annually, the International Awards strive to set international standards for beer judging and for New Zealand beer at large.
